The four of us make our way back to the plateau and look out across the darkness of the cavern. Now that we’ve been down here a few hours and my eyes have adjusted, it’s not as dark as I thought it was at first.

“Here they come,” Cazzie says, her gaze fixed on the darkness off to our left.

I squint to see, but all I’ve got is a black void and shadow. It takes a long while before I see the movement of what I assume are dragons in flight.

“It looks like lamb or venison for dinner for the three of you,” she says, swishing her tail.

Dart arrives a few moments later with the massive purple dragon and a slightly smaller black one. All three of them carry a dead animal in their mouths. Utiss and Bryvanay each have deer and Dart has a dead sheep.

My blue boy looks as proud and happy as I’ve ever seen him. When he sizes down, he leans forward and flops his kill at my feet. We went hunting across the countryside, and I caught your dinner.

I feel a bit like I did when the neighbor’s cat used to sit at the sliding glass door and leave me dead moles and mice. Only the dragon catch of the day is a lot bigger.

“Thank you—each of you. This is so thoughtful.”

Merlin assesses the kills and seems pleased. “Come. We’ll take the sheep up to the kitchen, and I’ll send one of the staff down to butcher the deer.”

“The kitchen staff?” I repeat. “You have kitchen staff in your dragon lair?”

He looks at me and chuckles. “No, girlfriend, but the lair is below Tintagel Castle. We’ll go up, get you something appropriate to wear, and make our contributions to dinner.”

“Awesome.” I scrub Dart’s horn and lean closer to pat his scaly jaw. “Are you good down here with the dragons, buddy?”

He nods. Yes. Saxa said she will teach me to blow smoke rings.

“Nice. Well, you two have fun, and we’ll check in later. Be good and call for me if you need me.”

Merlin grabs the sheep's front legs in one hand and the back legs in the other and swings it up and over his head to rest on his shoulders. When he straightens, he looks brawny and masculine, and I’m having trouble recognizing the Dora in him.

Where is his flashy, flaunty feminine side now?

Was it only Cazzie’s presence that gave him glitz?

I guess time will tell.

“Be safe.” He casts Cazzie a poignant glance. “We’ll be back by dark. If you need us or if anything unsettling should happen before then, call for us and Sloan can portal us back in a flash.”

Cazzie tilts her head to the side. “Go show your friends the castle, darling. From what you said, we have days before the plot to harm us unfolds. We shall figure out who’s behind it long before then.”

He nods. “Without a doubt.”

There’s a moment of quiet when their gazes lock, and they seem to have a private conversation.
